Cyberpunk 2077 Teaser Trailer Showcases a Dark New World

When I first heard about Cyberpunk 2077, the new IP from CD Projekt RED, I was sold. Cyberpunk-themed RPGs traditionally haven’t done very well, but if anyone can pull it off, it will be the developers of the superb Witcher series.

Until yesterday, we had essentially no information beyond the fact that the game is being crafted in partnership with Mike Pondsmith, creator of the pen-and-paper RPG Cyberpunk 2020. But now, we have a new trailer that contains some of the most beautiful pre-rendered footage I’ve ever seen. Although this video clearly doesn’t represent the in-game graphics of the game itself, it is definitely worth watching (and I highly advise watching in 1080p if you can):

Information about the Cyberpunk 2077 world was also made available in press releases sent out yesterday by CD Projekt RED. Night City will be the environment you step into, and it isn’t a peaceful one. The city is ruled by megacorporations and gangs that roam the streets. Nearly everyone is indulging in two dangerous new fads: augmentation and braindancing (both of which are showcased in the trailer above). First, we see a woman committing a brutal massacre, driven insane by the amount of augmentations she had undergone. After the logo, we see that her male compatriot was merely seeing that memory, living her life from the past. This is braindancing, where seeing the world through others’ memories is now a form of entertainment. The emphasis on both addictions in the press release would indicate they will likely be part of game mechanics.

Cyberpunk 2077 has no release date, but will be available “when it’s ready,” according to the trailer. The trailer also indicates that more info will be released on February 5, so stay tuned!
