The Essentials – John

I’ve been PC gaming for a very long time. In fact, I’m inching up on 20 years here. I’m old as dirt. Throughout my time spent gaming, there’s been a few games that I consider to be must plays.

1) Deus Ex

Deus Ex is the greatest game ever made. I stand by this, and will stand by this until the end of time. The story is enthralling and perfectly executed. The voice acting is great. RPG elements and FPS elements are combined flawlessly. It just works.

However, many were not aware that there was a multiplayer!

(This video was actually created by my friend Anthony, whom I met playing this game so many years ago.)

The multiplayer was created by a few members of the community, and later placed on the GOTY edition disk. Never in my life has a game sucked me in so much. I neglected sleep, work, girlfriends and I smoked alot of pot. At one point I was the best player in the world. No, I’m not kidding. Sadly, the MP is dead at this point. Occasionally I will load it up, and every server (all 6 of them) is empty. I cry a bit inside. I wish I was 15 again.

The Deus Ex GOTY Edition will run you $9.99 on Steam.

2) World of Warcraft

Yep. I said it. Shoot me and troll me if you please. 15 million people cannot be wrong. I met my best friend on WoW. (kbmod’s lovely CEO. He’s gay.) Some of the most satisfying moments in my gaming “career” came from WoW. Other than an orgasm, nothing feels better than downing a new raid boss after weeks and weeks of strategizing and painful 1% wipes.

Raiding is what makes WoW what it is. Some people enjoy PvP, others enjoy raiding. I’m one of the raiders.

(Video from my PoV! Our guild, Dudepile, killing the Lich King in Icecrown Citadel)

You can play WoW for free (trial version). Download it from BattleNet.

3) Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

Balanced, skill, speed and strategy. These are the words I would use to describe Enemy Territory. The fast paced gameplay required your aiming abilities to be sharp. Map knowledge and skill allowed you to move around the map seamlessly, trick jump and gain positional advantages over your enemies.

I met Brandon (kbmod contributor vol1tion) while playing ET. His clan had a server called The International House of Panzer. I’d venture to say that I spent a solid 2000 hours on this server playing this game. (Brandon was 12 and still one of the best players I’d ever seen) Sadly, the community for ET is nearly dead now as well. It’s hard to find a game that’s not all bots. If you know of active servers, PLEASE GIVE ME THE IP. I want to play this game again.. very very badly.

Oh yeah. I should probably mention that Enemy Territory was FREE. It was always free. It will always be free.

4) Medal of Honor: Allied Assault

Oh MoH:AA… I miss you. I got my start in competitive gaming playing this wonderul, beautiful game. (Hey, did you know these guys made CoD? I bet you didn’t!) I joined a clan/team called The Claymore Nation as I started playing this game. (I met the guys playing Deus Ex.) We went on to finish on top of numerous European leagues and ladders over the course of 3 or 4 years. I was the teams scope/sniper. The community was active and very friendly, and the competition was stiff as hell. If I were basing my top games off of my experience playing them competitively, there’s absolutely no way any game would top MoH:AA. Truly a masterpiece.

You can probably find a copy of Medal of Honor’s 10th anniversary edition at your local game retailer.

5) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Oh my hot damn. CoD 4. This was a tough one to put on this list, but I couldn’t resist. The last CoD game that didn’t suck on PC.

I have one word for you. Promod. Mods made CoD 4 what it is. Promod is a true testament to FPS skill. Movement, aim, tactics, awareness. Everything matters. One mistake, you’re dead. Play intelligently, you will succeed.

I’ve never played a game with such an intense skill gap. It takes a very long time to become even remotely decent at promod, and it takes years to master the game. If you want to test your worth in an FPS game, there’s no better option than CoD 4 promod.

Here – Have a frag movie by my buddy Mark (phantasy)
He’s a professional CoD 4 player. He’s like good and stuff.

You can purchase Call of Duty 4 : Modern Warfare on Steam for $19.99.

I’m an FPS gamer at heart. You can clearly see that. However, I have a soft spot for MMOs. The community/social aspect of MMOs is one of the major reasons PC gaming is superior.

Peace, love… and buy some TNT to blow up your consoles.
