6>Tom’s Hardware says CPU doesn’t matter for BF3
>Tom’s Hardware just put out a very comprehensive set of benchmarks with various hardware configurations running Battlefield 3. If you’re in the market for new hardware to improve your Battlefield 3 experience, I would encourage you to read the full article here.
The most important takeaway from the article is that, by and large, your CPU seems to have little effect on performance in Battlefield 3. In fact, a Core i3-2105, Core i7-2600K, and AMD’s new Bulldozer processor, the FX-8150, all held virtually identical frame rates in the benchmark.
Furthermore, performance doesn’t seem to scale with more cores either. When cores were disabled on the 2600K and FX-8150, the performance stayed virtually the same (except for an isolated instance with the AMD chip). Additionally, turning on Hyper-Threading for the 2600K offered no benefit.
Lastly, it should be noted that these benchmarks were only run over a specific segment of the single-player campaign, so it’s possible that multiplayer would yield different results. Still, these are some very interesting findings that contradict the original notion that BF3 would be very CPU-dependent.
