>Dead Island: A Juxtaposition of Trailers

Dead Island’s PR team has (possibly brilliantly) pitched the game in two very distinct manners with their two very different trailers.

The official announcement trailer was one of the best game trailers I’ve ever seen, hands down.  Incredible attention to detail in cinematography and direction, a Memento-like quality as the story regressed, and a simple yet moving original score behind it.
Personally I’m not normally interested in anything zombie related – games, movies, books – it’s just not my bag.  That trailer got me hooked, though.  It was moving and dramatic.  It made me want to kill zombies.
Fast forward to E3, and we’ve got a hip-hop score, a stereotypical protagonist and more hack and slash (with an electric machete, I might add) than I’ve seen in a long time.  It felt like I was watching GTA: Zombies.

So this had me (and I’m sure many others) wondering – “Which personality does this game really have?”  Are we dealing with an epic, dramatic, and solemn story?  Or are we dealing with a juvenile hack and slash joy ride? (Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but as I’ve said before, not my favorite genre)

Kotaku writer Drew Cohen had the opportunity for some face time with Dead Island recently, and wrote of its ability to exist in a duality.  Personally, I’m very interested to see what personality will take shape once the game has launched later this year.

Depending on depth and complexity of the story, Deep Silver and Techland could have a gem on their hands and might have successfully pulled me in to a genre that I wouldn’t normally have given the time of day.
