>RAGE hard because it is the end of the world

Unless you’ve been living under a rock recently you’ve probably heard about id Software’s (Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein etc.) latest title Rage. The buzz around Rage is very strong and understandably so. Id Software has a pedigree for making amazingly violent and visceral FPS games and Rage looks to continue the trend in spades.

That said, id has made it clear the Rage will be much more than just a violent and good looking PC title. A heavy emphasis has been placed on story this time around which is something new for id. Who needs a good narrative when you’re having fun blowing shit up though…right? Wrong. Games have evolved just a bit since the early Doom and Quake days. Getting a blue key to open a blue door might have been acceptable in 1993, but it doesn’t fly with today’s demanding gamer.

Personally, I’m glad Rage is being developed with such a strong focus on story. For a game to really grab me, and I know I’m not alone in this, a plot I can clearly understand and attach to is a must.

The latest developer commentary from id has revealed that Rage starts out with your character waking up inside an underground vault. You were there to wait out the apocalypse. It didn’t go all that well. You are the sole survivor from the vault and quickly realize you are going to have to fight to stay alive. Monster and humans roam the doomsday landscape. Weak and vulnerable, you slowly build up your abilities. Eventually you get caught up in a plot that is much bigger than yourself.

Now I know what you’re all thinking. Sounds familiar right? Yep, it sure does. Rage seems like it will follow (at least in the beginning) a very similar narrative to a little game called Fallout 3. Is that a bad thing? Not at all.

Only time will tell if this game turns out to be as good as it’s hyped to be. I’m crossing my fingers with the rest of you.
