>Feeling Old: Metroid Turns 25

>

Yes we know, it’s console, but a video game icon is an icon none-the-less.

Samus Aran is one of the most famous characters in gaming history and one of the games I played hardcore as a kid was indeed Metroid. Metroid was not full of cutesy characters or colorful vibrant screens with cartoonish enemies. It was desolate and empty and you were alone as Samus. A lone heroine set to destroy the aliens. This was another part of the story with Metroid. A female main character? This was rare and really still is.
The game took a long hiatus after it’s Gameboy and Super Nintendo titles. It was not on Nintendo 64 at all. Metroid Prime was excellent though, and a great comeback on the Gamecube. The game was out of character for Nintendo as it was, being a serious, hardcore title. Nintendo doesn’t tend to do those well and that’s perhaps why they handed it off to other developers.
Regardless, we celebrate this gaming icon today. If you have a Wii, try out one of the old games on the arcade. You won’t be disappointed. Even better, maybe try out Metroid – Other M, the newest iteration of the series for the Wii.
